RS Components versus Sony UK Technology Centre charity football match raises £6k for Children with Cancer

RS Components (RS) has helped raise more than £6,000 for Children with Cancer (CwC) after beating a team from Pencoed-based Sony UK Technology Centre in a charity football match at the King Power Stadium – home of former Premier League champions Leicester City.

As well as aiming to score goals, RS had an ‘own goal’ of raising funds for CwC, its chosen charity.



RS hosted the match at which it achieved a 2-1 win, which was the second to have taken place between the two teams after RS walked away with a 4-1 victory last year over host team Sony UK TEC.

Andy Keenan, Vice President of Category Management Semiconductors & Passives at RS Components, said: “We have been working alongside Sony UK Technology Centre and the Raspberry Pi Foundation to bring the Raspberry Pi credit card-sized single board computers to children, computer enthusiasts and makers worldwide.

“But our collaborative mission this time was very different, involving 22 very determined men in a serious battle – but all in the name of a great cause! It was a well-fought match and we commend the Sony UK TEC team in their efforts to snatch back the title, but we are delighted to again be victorious.

“We are proud of our team and even more proud of the fantastic amount we’ve all managed to raise for Children with Cancer, our chosen charity for which we have so far raised £150,000 since we announced our support in April 2017. Well done to all involved – it really was a team effort in more ways than one,” he added.

RS employees have been taking part in fundraising events for CwC since 2017, including taking on mountains in the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge and a skydive from a plane, as well as forming a team of 25 people who ran in the challenging London Marathon in April.

Children with Cancer UK is a charity that funds invaluable research into childhood cancers and developing the very best treatment for these. Currently, CwC is funding more than 50 live research projects, along with providing both financial and emotional support for families whose children are undergoing treatment.
