The race is on for solar car challenge

Amada Miyachi Europe provides equipment and technical assistance for solar car Ruhr-University Bochum students who will race in World Solar Challenge

Amada Miyachi Europe has provided equipment and technical assistance to a group of students from Ruhr-University Bochum (RUB), who are building a solar car to compete in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge (WSC).

The event takes place in Australia in October 2017.



Students participating in SolarCar Project Bochum used capacitor discharge based resistance welding equipment to weld battery cells used in the solar car’s battery packs.

The equipment included AMYE’s MG3 heavy-duty weld monitoring unit.

AMYE experts supported the students during the battery tab design phase to ensure the best geometry for the welding process.

They also shared their know-how and experience in setting the most suitable welding and monitoring parameters to ensure high quality and reproducibility in the battery pack weld joints.

The WSC event showcases the development of advanced automotive technology and promotes alternatives to conventional vehicle engines.

Every two years, teams from leading international universities and technical institutes, together with private entrepreneurs, travel to Australia to test and promote the new vehicles.

The team from RUB is one of the largest solar car teams in the world, with more than 50 members.

The 3,000 kilometre race begins in Darwin in the Northern Territory and travels the Stuart Highway to Port Augusta, finishing in the City of Adelaide in South Australia.
