India likely to add over 9mtpa of urea capacity by 2030

India is likely to witness urea capacity additions of 9.28 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) between 2024 and 2030, from six new build and two expansion projects, contributing about 14% of the global capacity additions, says GlobalData, the data and analytics company.

GlobalData’s latest report, Urea Capacity and Capital Expenditure Outlook by Region, Countries, Companies, Projects and Forecast to 2030, shows that urea capacity additions in India are expected to come from four announced and four planned projects.

Nivedita Roy, Oil and Gas Analyst at GlobalData, Comments: “Urea is primarily used as a fertiliser in the agriculture industry and for industrial applications such as for the production of plastics. The growing agriculture and plastics industries in India are driving urea capacity additions in the country.”

In India, the major capacity addition is from an announced project, Reliance Industries Jamnagar Urea Plant, with a capacity of 2.60mtpa. Reliance Industries Ltd has a 100% stake in the plant and is also the operator of the project. Located in the state of Gujarat, it is expected to commence production in 2026.

Matix Fertilisers & Chemicals Panagarh Urea Plant 2 follows next and is expected to come online in 2028 with a capacity of 1.46mtpa. Matix Fertilisers & Chemicals Ltd is the operator of the plant located in the state of West Bengal.
