Torsion Springs – axial rotational energy systems

Torsion springs are used for hinges, counterbalances and lever return applications

Where it is necessary to apply a torque or to store rotational energy then Lee Spring torsion springs are frequently the most efficient solution.

This is by virtue of their action around a core with ends which can be formed into a wide range of leg shapes twisted and formed to suit the project needs.

This ready forming characteristic means that torsion springs are used in clothes pins, clipboards, swing-down tailgates, garage doors, window shades, counterbalance mechanisms, ratchets and various types of machine components.

Torsion springs are used for hinges, counterbalances and lever return applications. They are also used as couplings between concentric shafts, such as in a motor and pump assembly.

Generally torsion springs perform best when supported by a shaft or mandrel – or otherwise set within a cylindrical cavity as this stabilises them
against the forces involved when they store/release angular energy or statically hold a mechanism in place by deflecting the legs axially about the body centreline.

Many standard variations of torsion springs are offered ex-stock from the Lee Spring catalogue – plus the possibility of custom leg forms.

In coming to a custom specification we believe designers will benefit from the guidance provided on the Lee Spring Spring-i-pedia site where relevant formulae and other information can be found in establishing design parameters for torsion springs.
