UKIVA Machine Vision 2018: Visual inspection of round, unaligned packages

A recent addition to the Mettler-Toledo stable is the V2410 Mosaic, a powerful, space-saving 360° inspection solution for visual packaging and label control
Mettler-Toledo UK will be giving virtual demonstrations of the latest product inspection solutions at UKIVA Machine Vision Conference & Exhibition 2018.

The company will also share their considerable expertise in the latest technological developments when John Eicholtz, Vision Inspection Product Specialist, presents his seminar Vision Technologies for Round Consumer Packaging as part of the Systems and Applications summit.

A recent addition to the Mettler-Toledo stable is the V2410 Mosaic, which offers companies in the food and cosmetics industries a powerful, space-saving 360° inspection solution for visual packaging and label control.

The V2410 Mosaic visual inspection system allows for complete 360° inspection of round, unaligned containers without using the stitching method.

Equipped with six cameras arranged in a circle, the V2410 Mosaic avoids the risk of incorrect code readings that can often occur with other 360° inspection solutions that use fewer cameras and sometimes produce faulty stitching results.

The V2410 Mosaic uses its cameras to record the entire product surface from different angles and generates a series of images with minimal distortion.

This approach eliminates the need to inspect a product image that has been compiled from multiple individual images during the stitching process.

The panel technology used by the V2410 Mosaic visual inspection system minimises product rejections resulting from faulty calibration and poor image quality, and significantly simplifies product changes and the calibration process.

The V2410 Mosaic can also be extended with a seventh camera from above to inspect visible or UV codes affixed to lids and seals.

Thanks to its compact design, the V2410 Mosaic is ideally suited to use on production lines with limited space and allows for installation above the production line without existing systems having to be reorganised.

The standard model with an IP65 rating provides cameras and lighting with protection against high-pressure water jets and even makes use in harsh washdown production environments possible.

The V2410 Mosaic visual inspection system comes with the powerful CIVCore software as standard. CIVCore is used to analyse the product data that has been visually recorded.

The clearly structured software user interface is intuitive and easy to operate, meaning that there is no need for any costly and time-consuming training or orientation.

Depending on the complexity of the inspection, CIVCore analyses more than 1000 product images per minute and compares these against stored reference images.

The software checks whether text information, such as the weight and ingredients, and graphical elements like barcodes and logos are printed completely, correctly, and legibly.

At the same time, CIVCore includes packaging properties in the analysis and checks for incorrect closure of boxes or missing sleeves, for example.

A further innovation in vision inspection is the new Dot Print tool, which enables dot matrix codes and labels – which are commonly used within the food industry – to be read reliably, even under difficult conditions; such as when the print is distorted, uneven, or skewed.

Within the packaging industry, this tool opens up new application scenarios for the improvement of product safety and the implementation of back-reading and Track & Trace systems.

UKIVA Machine Vision 2018 takes place at Arena MK, Milton Keynes, on 16 May 2018.
